Coptic Alphabet: Unique Consonants

There are 24 consonants in the Coptic language; 7 are unique to Coptic.

Ϣ (Shai)

Shai is pronounced as the "sh" in "shift"

Ϥ (Fai)

Fai is pronounced as the "f" in "father"

Ϧ (Khai)

Khai is pronounced as the voiceless velar fricative, similar to gamma (see my post on the consonants of coptic that come from greek); pronounce it the same way that you pronounce gamma, except when you breath out don't try to produce any noise. Khai should sound exactly like the arabic خ .

Ϩ (Hori)

Hori is pronounced as the "h" in "house"

Ϫ (Janja)

Janja is pronounced as the "s" in "measure" or as the "j" in judge

Ϭ (Cheema)

Cheema is pronounced as the "ch" in "chariot" or as the "sh" in "shawl"

Ϯ (Ti)

Ti is a ⲧ(tav) with an ⲓ(iota) on top and it is pronounced like a combination of the two; it is pronounced as the "dee" in "deep".
